Walking into Unknown Territory

Allow me to set the scene. I started my job in marketing with visions of Don Draper-style prestige and glamour. Little did I know, I was wandering into a minefield of product insights, customer profiling, data campaigning, and other terms that might as well have been in ancient hieroglyphics for all the sense they were making to me.

I was clueless in the classic dictionary definition of the term. And anyone observing my first-ever attempt at creating a data-driven marketing campaign would not have been wrong to assume that I was essentially flinging spaghetti on a wall, hoping some would stick.

This is what happens when cluelessness meets overconfidence head-on: You end up with a spaghetti fiasco. Despite barely knowing my customer bases from my elbow, I plunged head-first into a campaign that I was certain — with misplaced newbie cheery optimism — would be a smashing success.

It’s needless to say that my spaghetti didn’t stick.

Instead of landing smoothly and leading to delicious results, it made a spectacular mess, attracting too many wrong demographics too soon and overwhelming our support services to a fiasco level. The end result? Dismal response rates, irritated customers, and a very red face for yours truly.
